Luxury hotels in the UK’s North-East

Sometimes it’s nice to indulge yourself with a luxurious getaway – even if you’re not jetting off to exotic climes or staying away for several weeks. Fortunately, there are some lavish hotels in the north-east of England that are perfect for a romantic break with your partner or spending quality time with your family. Below, you’ll find a list of what I think is some of the best holiday accommodation in the north-east.

Langley Castle Hotel

Where: Langley-on-Tyne, Northumberland

There’s a real sense of magic about castles, so I think the idea of staying in one is fantastic. At Langley Castle Hotel, that’s exactly what you can do.

Dating back to the 14th century, this fortification looks like the kind of castle you see in fairytales – especially as it’s set in a 12-acre woodland. Alongside the main castle, there are two other Grade I Listed buildings onsite, both offering charming accommodation with views up to the main castle.

Staying here, you can expect truly lavish surroundings – think four-poster beds, spas baths and, in some cases, fantastic window seats set into the 7 ft thick castle walls. As you’d probably expect, the food here is really impressive too, with Josephine’s Restaurant being highly acclaimed. Plus, there’s a lovely oak-panelled cocktail bar you really shouldn’t miss.

Close House Hotel and Golf

Where: Close House Estate, Heddon-on-the-Wall, Northumberland

If you’re a keen golfer, my next suggestion is bound to be your favourite. And, if not, it’s definitely somewhere you should consider anyway, thanks to its combination of luxurious accommodation and fine dining.

Located in a restored 18th-century mansion on the Close House Estate, this hotel has four AA stars to its name alongside a prestigious award or two – including a bronze award in the Small Hotel of the Year category in the North East England Tourism Awards 2012. It also boasts not one but two 18-hole golf courses – the Lee Westwood Colt Course and the Lee Westwood Filly Course. There’s also a driving range, clubhouse and academy offering tuition.

What’s more, Close House Hotel is fantastic if you’re a foodie, being home to highly-regarded eatery the Argent D’Or Restaurant, as well as a champagne bar and more.

Jesmond Dene House Hotel & Restaurant

Where: Jesmond Dene, Jesmond, Newcastle

My final suggestion is the wonderful Jesmond Dene House Hotel in Newcastle. My favourite thing about this place is that it’s nestled in picturesque woodland, which gives it the feel of a secluded hideaway, yet it’s actually really close to the city centre. So, you can have the best of both worlds.

This is another hotel that’s won a host of awards, including the Cesar Award – City Hotel of the Year 2013. Another great thing about coming here is that each bedroom is individually designed, which makes a nice change from the cardboard cut-out style rooms of many big chain establishments.

The food here deserves a mention, too – the restaurant has an excellent reputation for serving up incredibly fresh, flavoursome dishes. Many of the ingredients come straight from the kitchen garden, and the establishment has very deservedly been awarded three AA Rosettes. Expect classic but contemporary cooking at its best!

Just as a final note, NewcastleGateshead is a really good source if you want a little more inspiration on luxurious places to stay in the north-east.
